Japanese inheritance law applies to Japanese living overseas?
1. Japanese national living 30 years outside Japan (permanent tax residence outside Japan) - only going to Japan for short summer holiday every year. 2. All assets are outside Japan. 3. Has a will in country of residence. 4. Heirs are Japanese nationals with permanant residence in the same country outside Japan and non Japanese nationals.
Question 1: Is this Japanese national or any of the heirs subject to Japanese inheritance tax laws?
Question 2: If any assets in the above situation are IN Japan, does that change anything?

For question one, wherever the will was made, or the decedent died, Japanese inheritance laws (Civil Code) and inheritance tax laws would apply if the decedent was a Japanese citizen.
However, suppose the decedent and its heirs meet all of the following conditions from 1 to 3. In that case, no inheritance tax will be imposed on property outside of Japan.
